I'll be frank, I always liked the concept behind Fiverr.com.
Just a few clicks and a customer can put an order with a freelancer based on a particular set of deliverables.
Easy peasy, right? Sure, however, it comes at a cost. A major one.
This is one the very few freelance platforms in which buyers are given free reign to abuse, threaten and outright blackmail vendors any way that they like.
Why? Since Fiverr turn a blind eye to it.
In this post, I want to share a recent bad experience as a seller on Fiverr, and also I decided to give up on the stage entirely.
How A Regular Order Instantly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
While I've been employing Fiverr myself (on and off) for a little while, this specific experience relates to my girlfriend's account, not my own.
(I've been advising her on building a reputable account, and the way to go beyond and above with every previous order. Everything mentioned is her doing, I'm only an audience )
In cases like this, she'd only gotten another $5 sequence on her emblem gig, which seemed to be similar to another... or so we thought.
The order was fulfilled in good time, and my girlfriend had even included a bonus emblem concept in addition to the source file (which is usually a part of the costlier package).
The client"loved" one of the concepts and so we proceeded to deliver her the appropriates record sizes, as mentioned in the gig description. Shortly afterwards, things got a little bizarre.
The customer came back asking for a social media kit to choose the logo, something which is clearly not available as part of her post.
In my advice, my girlfriend chose to provide the extra job, although not getting paid any extra for this.
Following that, the client responded with even more requirements and a few adjustments to the social media files.
At this time, she consented enough was enough.
Despite every effort to please this individual, they have been clearly overstepping their boundaries here.
That is when the customer went from only overstepping boundaries to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of carrying my girlfriend's Fiverr reputation hostage.)
While she took a while to contemplate a response and reach to Fiverr support for assistance, the client did finally go ahead and render a 1 star review.
Presumably this was to demonstrate her he/she wasn't fiverr Reviews Glassdoor.ie kidding.
Soon after, while waiting on Fiverr's response to the support query, the client paid an extra $10 for the social networking kit.
Obviously, the payment has been accompanied by still another threat.
At this point, all I wanted to do was move he said all Liam Neeson and search this individual down so I could repeatedly punch them from the face.
But, at the time, I had hope that Fiverr support will step in and save my girlfriend from that PITA client.
After the answer came back from Fiverr support, they told that they could Fiverr Reviews G2 Crowd not induce the buyer to take the purchase.
Alright, that is fair enough. (though the purchaser already accepted it.)
In addition they suggested drawing up a listing for the buyer to reveal the work was completed in accordance with the gig prerequisites.
My girlfriend communicated in her first email that the customer was trying to extort her for free work out the agreed terms, by leaving a negative inspection if she did not comply.
Naturally, it wasn't really about the job, it was all about seeking protection against an abusive customer who had been blatantly pushing their luck.
Their answer did not provide either of us some confidence that Fiverr actually knew that, and even at this stage we felt like they did not need to get involved.
At the exact same time, she responded to the buyers latest threat, explaining that she would not continue to function with them unless the comments had been changed/removed.
(Again, this is feedback that was clearly and blatantly made to bully her into supplying work out the agreed provisions )
An honest request by anyones standards, correct?
Instead of acknowledge what the buyer had completed until this time, Fiverr instantly turned the tables on my girlfriend.
Turns out, she had been the only breaking all the rules.
Because she had asked the client to change their feedback, she was no longer eligible for some assistance from Fiverr assistance.
It's possible to imagine how we both felt studying this.
What the buyer had said and done before her very last message was now being swept under the rug -- as if never happened whatsoever.
Fiverr basically opted to support a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend with a permanent stain in an account she had worked so difficult to accumulate.
If everything that happened wasn't troubling enough, it's knowing that this individual is still running rampant on Fiverr, preying on defensless sellers without a sprinkling of repercussion.
And believe me, there are tons of buyers doing exactly this on Fiverr, knowing they can and will eliminate it.
Well, as most this was happening, I did a little investigating to determine if some other vendors went through a similar ordeal with an individual purchaser.
Quite quickly, I discovered a variety of nearly equal cases about the Fiverr forum dated years back. (that's correct, years.)
This is clearly something that's been going on for quite a while and it all stems from giving buyers too much power over vendors.
If there's 1 thing I have learned about Fiverr, it is that customers are ALWAYS more valued than freelancers.
Doesn't matter how much time you put into a project, or just how hard you worked on it, or maybe how long you handled communication in a dispute, even if it actually comes down to it... freelancers have little to no security.
Even if it is a very clear cut case in your favor, there is still every chance the client will come out at the top. It takes it one little thing you"did wrong" in accordance with their conditions of support and EVERYTHING else is disregarded
Taking a look at the evidence, it is clear to me that Fiverr is well aware of what's going on, yet is still eager to settle back and let it happen.
A Last Message To Fiverr. If you're a decision maker at Fiverr and you're reading this, then I implore you to seriously reconsider your present support procedures for freelancers.
It's not right that somebody can place all that time and effort in building up an account and also over-delivering at every possible chance, only to be shot down by the very people that you rely on to safeguard you.
Look, I really don't want to abandon Fiverr. I don't wish to be telling folks to prevent your own platform.
But after everything that's happened, you haven't left me any decision.
Until something is done in order to protect freelancers from using this sort of abuse, I'll continue to spread this post and do anything I can to prevent others from falling prey to a one-sided support team.
The second you truly do something about it and also give freelancers a means to fight , I'll be happy to update the article.
